The votes for the 2020-21 Community Reading have been tallied, and the winner is Silent Spring by Rachel Carson.
“Carson’s writing initiated a transformation in the relationship between humans and the natural world and stirred an awakening of public environmental consciousness,” notes Carson biographer Linda Lear.
”For many, this challenging time is changing our relationship with the environment,” says Mike Olin, dean of academic advising and co-curricular programs. “People are connecting with the environment in new ways now as a means of escape, relief, and reflection.”
Throughout the year, the entire community will be invited to an interdisciplinary series of events that will explore the themes of this groundbreaking book more fully and engage the community in intellectual dialogue with the text.
