No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality, by Michael J Fox.
A few years ago, my father-in-law was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. This strong big man who walked miles for a living and taught me to waterski now shuffles around the house and uses a walker when he goes out. I read this book partly because I loved Back to the Future, but I also thought it might provide some insight into PD. Fox’s descriptions of the negotiations he has every day with his legs to see if they’ll carry him around the house ring true for others with PD. His financial success in life has certainly made things for him and his family a little easier and helped him remain independent. Hopefully, the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research will help others continue to thrive after their diagnosis. —Laurie Caslake, professor of biology
