Listening, supporting, and encouraging your friends can really make a difference in their life. Sometimes you might hesitate to bring up a concern because you are afraid you will upset your friend, hurt your friendship, or not be helpful, but most of the time your friend will be grateful to know that someone cared enough to reach out and take a risk. You can be there for your friends by looking for signs of distress, listening to concerns, and linking folks to a variety of campus resources. To learn more about how to be a part of a community that cares, take a look at the Counseling Center website. The “BE THERE” presentation helps students put these ideas into action. Student organizations can request a “BE THERE” training by completing this form.
