Prof. Mary Jo Lodge, head of the Theater Department, presented a paper entitled “The Last (Twenty) Five Years: Women Directors and Director/Choreographers on Broadway” at the Library of Congress earlier this month. She presented the research she conducted with the assistance of EXCEL Scholars Elliot Park ’27 and Sophia Gal ’27 at the Stage Struck IV Conference focused on “Women and the American Musical.” Lodge has been tracking the hiring of directors and director/choreographers on Broadway since 1950, with a focus on the last 25 years. Her work revealed that women on Broadway today have fewer opportunities than they did 25 years ago, though the same is not true for male directors and director/choreographers, and her paper included some speculation as to why the disparity persists.
