Counted Out shows us the power of math in our society, our economy, and our democracy.Lafayette will partner with Easton Area School District for a community screening of Counted Out, 7:30 p.m. Wed., Nov. 5, at Easton Area Middle School (EAMS) Auditorium, 1010 Echo Trail. The event is open to all, with free admission and parking.

The 2024 documentary highlights the role of math in society, citing math proficiency as a critical determinant of social and economic power.

“In our current information economy, math is everywhere. The people we date, the news we see, the influence of our votes, the candidates who win elections, the education we have access to, the jobs we get—all of it is underwritten by an invisible layer of math that few of us understand, or even notice,” according to a news release from Reel Link Films.

Counted Out shows what’s at risk if we keep the status quo. Do we want an America in which most of us don’t see ourselves as ‘math people’? Where math proficiency goes down as students grow up? Or do we want a country where everyone can understand the math that undergirds our society—and can help shape it?”

The screening continues a math connection established between Lafayette and EASD over the last 15 years. As part of Prof. Rob Root’s FYS 141: Mathematics of Social Justice class, his FYS students visit EAMS weekly to help students break down math concepts and grow their math confidence. The FYS students will facilitate a discussion following the screening. MORE
