Looking for a winter job or internship? Scammers are active right now and targeting students.

The most common trap: Someone emails you claiming to be a professor or department head offering a “virtual assistant” job. They send you a check for supplies and ask you to Zelle/wire a portion back. Remember: Real jobs will NEVER ask you to pay them to start working. Here are three signs it’s a scam:

  • The email ends in @gmail or @hotmail, not the official .edu address.
  • They hire you instantly without an interview.
  • They ask for payment via gift cards, Zelle, or Crypto.
