Dear Members of the Lafayette Community:

Student Government condemns and denounces hate and abhorrent language and behaviors intended to harm any member of our learning community on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation. We are firmly committed to peace, justice, civil discourse, social-emotional support, and respect for all.

The racially motivated killings and brutality toward African Americans and Black people have no rightful place in our nation or our Lafayette community. The recent public events of the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd by police officers are unacceptable. No human being deserves to be murdered because of the color of their skin. As a community, we must remain vigilant in the fight for justice while recognizing that our campus is a microcosm of these injustices. We know that far more can be done to support victims and those fighting for justice.

It is with great understanding that when students of color, specifically Black students, are accepted to Lafayette that we are making a commitment to fostering an environment that acknowledges the weight that is held attending this institution. That said, Student Government is committed to taking action and fostering an environment and community that is inclusive, caring, and feels like a home for every one of our students.

Student Government is not only standing in solidarity with Mr. Floyd, Ms. Taylor, and the thousands of Black people who are victims of not only structuralized violence but institutional racism every day. Student Government is committed to:

  • Collaborating with other campus organizations to host a fundraiser and educational campaign to raise funds and bring awareness to these injustices.
  • Fostering conversations with Public Safety and their interactions with Black people on campus.
  • Incorporating anti-racist training into Student Government and encouraging other Organizations and the Lafayette community to do so as well.
  • Encouraging everyone to take action and get involved.

Please be on the lookout for more information. Additionally, we are a resource for you so please reach out with any concerns, ideas, or suggestions.

Sincerely,

Lafayette Student Government
