A smartphone image of Professor Joe Shieber talking with four students via the Marco Polo appProfessor Joe Shieber uses Marco Polo, a phone-based app that allows him to conduct class discussions asynchronously. Available on Android and iPhone, Marco Polo is a push-to-talk video walkie-talkie that saves all communications in a group thread. Students in FYS 086, Propaganda, respond to prompts and to each other without having to be online at the same time. He reports that participation in discussions has been at a record high 100%, making Marco Polo a great tool to hear from students who otherwise might rarely participate in classroom discussions.
