The McKelvy Scholars will host a discussion led by Jane Fergusson ’21 and Mario Sanchez ’21 on Sunday at 6 p.m. Email the group for the Zoom link. Bring a favorite poem if you wish. Background for the talk:

A book with a poem on the right page and several roses laying on top of the left pageWe will begin the discussion by exploring why people feel uncomfortable or intimidated by poetry and then examining what the world of poetry looks like today. Between the controversy of Instagram poets like Rupi Kaur and the meteoric rise of Amanda Gorman, one might conclude that poetry is either dying or has never been more alive. A few things to think about:

  1. Are you afraid of poetry? Why or why not?
  2. Have you ever tried to write poetry yourself?
  3. What constitutes Real Poetry? Is Instagram poetry actually poetry?
  4. Do you think poetry is dying?
  5. Do you care?
