A map of the College Hill area shows the intersection of College Avenue and McCartney Street. With ongoing construction to the College's historic stairway, students are encouraged to use pedestrian crossings to the east on Cattell Street in lieu of the intersection of College Avenue and McCartney Street. The intersection of McCartney Street and College Avenue lacks a well-defined pedestrian crossing.

Lafayette College is working closely with the City of Easton and has encouraged the city to seek permission from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to install a safer pedestrian crossing. The city agreed and has petitioned the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to allow the installation of the pedestrian crossing. The city remains optimistic that permission for such an improvement will be granted.

In the meantime, we encourage students to use pedestrian crossings to the east on Cattell Street in lieu of the intersection of College Avenue and McCartney Street. Alternatively, we encourage students to use our very frequent, free campus shuttle and public transportation.

The current construction on the historic stairs has exacerbated the challenges of walking to downtown Easton but we are looking forward to being able to use the renovated pathway which begins very near the intersection of College Avenue and McCartney Street and ends at the base of College Hill near Don Juan Mex Grill. The new pathway will safely deliver pedestrians to downtown Easton and it will do so utilizing a scenic trail through our wooded escarpment.

This is a difficult and dangerous intersection for pedestrians as well as drivers pulling onto College Avenue from McCartney Street, as I do on my commute after work. Unfortunately, I also often witness cars barely stopping, if at all, at the intersections of High Street and McCartney, as well as March and McCartney. My experiences are often when I am the pedestrian waiting to cross. I fear for our students, who unlike me, do not even look before crossing via crosswalks.
