EGRS Assist. Prof. Sarah Appelhans proposes Amartya Sen’s “capabilities approach” as a learner-centered, social justice framework for engineering education. In contrast to vocation-based conceptions, the capabilities approach frames education as expanding human freedoms, encouraging us to broaden our perceptions of what engineers do, and viewing students as active participants who use engineering education to pursue lives they value. This is the first in a four-part series on Engineering and Social Justice produced by the Lafayette Forum on Technology and the Liberal Arts with support from the Class of 1974 Technology and Liberal Arts Endowment.
