Mechanical engineering student Avery Sichel ’26 recently presented “The Better Kitchen Sink,” (BKS) at the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Symposium in Colorado. The project addresses global water inequity through a low-cost solution developed by students in Dzaleka and the U.S. Sichel is now launching a pilot program with 50 families in a Malawian village. Building on several years of field collaboration in response to major water access changes in Dzaleka, the project will focus on scaling through local entrepreneurship. Though Avery began this work independently prior to his time at Lafayette, his efforts to scale BKS internationally represent a powerful example of the “Cur Non” spirit and the impact of student-led global citizenship.
