Effective Jan 1, 2027, Lafayette’s pharmacy benefits program for full-time eligible employees who elect the group medical insurance plan will transition to RxBenefits with Express Scripts as the pharmacy benefit manager. As part of this transition, Capital Blue Cross will no longer use Prime Therapeutics to manage the pharmacy benefit. Capital Blue Cross will continue to manage the medical plan. Human Resources will host info sessions before and during the Open Enrollment period to share details on the changes.

Key takeaways

  • Two ID cards: Starting Jan. 1, 2027, you will use two separate ID cards for medical and prescription coverage:
  • Capital Blue Cross ID Card: For medical services
  • Express Scripts ID Card: For prescription medications
  • Watch your mail: Over the coming months, carefully review any mail sent to your home from RxBenefits / Express Scripts. If you enroll in the 2027 medical plan, you will receive a new Express Scripts pharmacy card and an updated Capital Blue Cross medical card. You also may receive specific notices regarding your account setup and any potential adjustments to the current medications for you or any dependents in your family.

Pharmacy benefit change information sessions and support

Human Resources will host info sessions on the 2027 pharmacy benefit to share details on these changes. Employees are encouraged to join an upcoming information session to learn more and ask questions. Sessions will be offered before, during, and after the open enrollment period.

  • Virtual information session: Mon., Oct. 26, 12:30-1:30 p.m. RSVP
  • Benefits Open Enrollment Fair: Wed., Nov. 4 (An RxBenefits representative will be in attendance.)
  • 1-on-1 campus visits: A representative from RxBenefits will be on campus to answer questions after Open Enrollment closes. (More details to follow.)

Why we are making this change

Because Lafayette’s medical plan operates under a self-insured arrangement, the College has the flexibility to regularly evaluate how the plan is administered and whether changes will provide a greater value for employees, as well as the College. Working in partnership with the LVAIC consortium and an insurance broker, the College carefully evaluated pharmacy benefit options with a focus on managing the continued rise in prescription drug costs, maintaining competitive plan costs, and ensuring employees and their dependents continue to have access to high-quality prescription medications. This transition is intended to maintain affordable access to medications while strengthening our ability to manage spending. The change affects only the administration of the pharmacy benefit; it does not change the overall medical plan designs.
