The American Jewish community played a significant, though often overlooked, role in the American Revolution. In 1790, President George Washington sent a historic letter to the Hebrew Congregation of Newport, Rhode Island, affirming the promise of religious liberty and equality. Many recognize Washington’s celebrated words, “To bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance,” but there is much more to this remarkable correspondence. Prof. Jonathan Sarna, one of the nation’s most eminent and widely respected historians of American Jewish history and a leading authority on American Judaism, will bring this fascinating history to life, exploring its deeper meaning and enduring significance for Jews and Americans of all faiths. 8-10 p.m. Tues., Nov. 10 • Zoom • MORE
